DUAL-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Hutchins Bros engage 1-2 apprentices annually to complete a dual apprenticeship. This is how it works:

First Year: The first year of the apprenticeship is spent in our paint shed, learning the Protective Coatings side, while gaining a Certificate III in Surface Preparation and Coating Application. 

Years 2-4: For the next three years, the apprentice moves into the workshop, and attend TAFE, completing their Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade.

Final Year: Once their TAFE certificate is complete, the last year of the apprenticeship is spent refining knowledge and skills of the trade.

APPRENTICE SUCCESS STORIES

  • Laith Kitching

    Laith began a school-based apprenticeship with Hutchins Bros in October 2017. By the start of 2018, he had committed to a full-time apprenticeship. Laith demonstrated an outstanding level of dedication and commitment to his trade and learning new skills. This saw him receive HBE's first 'Apprentice of the Year' award in 2019. As a result of his dedication, Laith advanced to Leading Hand, then Production Foreman, and now has moved into the role of Workshop Foreman, overseeing and managing the workshop staff and operations. In 2026, Laith completed the AS 2214 Welding Supervisor’s course, enabling him to now supervise, coordinate, and certify structural steel welds as a qualified welding supervisor.

  • Rebekah Beer

    After completing Year 12 in 2022, Rebekah began a gap-year working in our office three days a week in an Admin Support role. By the middle of the year she began full-time employment through a Traineeship, gaining a Certificate IV in Business. Having completed this in 2025, she is responsible for social media marketing, promoting Hutchins Bros at Careers Expos, and coordinating with local schools and organisations to facilitate industry tours and work experience opportunities for students. Rebekah also manages the Contract Admin for a number of projects, while contributing to the management of our Quality, Safety and Environmental Systems.

  • Tyler Webster

    Since commencing a Boilermaker Apprenticeship with Hutchins Bros in 2011, Tyler has worked in a number of different areas across our business. From a tradesman on the workshop floor, Tyler also operated the Beamline, loaded trucks, worked away on job sites erecting steel, operated the crane and progressed to Junior Workshop Foreman. Then in 2020, Tyler moved into the office to begin an Estimating Cadetship. Tyler is now a Full-Time Estimator, while also overseeing and supporting the operation, repair, and training of our CNC Machines. Tyler’s commitment and various experience within Hutchins Bros has lead him to succeed in his current role.

  • Isaac Kschenka

    Isaac is currently completing his dual apprenticeship at Hutchins Bros. He achieved his Certificate III in Surface Preparation and Coating Application in 2023. Having demonstrated an excellent commitment and attention to detail, Isaac additionally completed the AMPP Coating Inspector Program, enabling him to complete quality inspections of coated steel work. While undertaking his Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade, he assists in the operation of our AGT BeamMaster Welding Robot and Kinetic. Taking out the Hutchins Bros Apprentice of the Year Award in 2024, Isaac has completed a number of High-Risk Work tickets, becoming a key staff member for on-site work.

  • Cindy Ridley

    Starting with Hutchins Bros in 2014, Cindy completed her Certificate IV in Frontline Management as a mature-age trainee. Since then, Cindy has also completed Health and Safety Representative training, an Auditing and Quality Management Systems course, and recently her Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety. Cindy is the Hutchins Bros Safety Officer, Document Controller and Systems Administrator. She oversees Quality Assurance, and assists in managing our overarching Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental systems. Also managing the Contract Admin for numerous projects, Cindy has assisted Hutchins Bros in achieving Green Star and CC3 requirements.

INDUSTRY TOURS

Through partnership with local high schools, TAFE NSW, and ‘Grow Our Own’, Hutchins Bros have facilitated a number of Industry Tours of our business. This provides students and individuals the opportunity to learn more about what we do and the various career opportunities within the steel industry.
